Natural Golf Swing Drills

(Left Hand Players use reverse directions)

In order to make a smooth Natural Golf Swing, in the STABLE Stance, it is necessary to return the position at impact to the same as it was at set-up.  That may sound odd, but if you can look at your self in the set-up position, make a swing so that your body is facing the ball at impact.

Drill #1:  Hitting balls with arm swing only

“An Arm Generated Body Motion Swing”

How do we do that?  This can be done with all clubs.

In your set-up position, penetrate your left knee toward your left flared out foot, swing and actually hit a golf ball.  Do not move your lower body.  You will find that because your right hand is in the shake hands position of your NATURAL HOLD on the handle, your right palm will return to facing the target at impact.

Drill #2:  Lateral Sway Drill

Hold a club upside down with left hand, where the butt end is in front of left toe. With right hand on right hip, push hip down and at same time laterally move your lower body toward target. Allow your left knee to penetrate toward left toe and keep right leg straight.  This is your impact position and will keep your body square to target.

Drill #3:  Face Ball at impact

Standing erect, place a club with left hand 18” in front of right toe.  Address ball in center of stance and with right hand only, make a back swing.  Come down with right hand only to impact under the left forearm and allow the left knee to fold toward left toe.  Keep the right palm in an open position and let the lower body laterally move toward target.

Drill #4:  Rock Baby

Hold a club across front of shoulders with crossed arms.  Make a shoulder motion back swing until the butt end of club points at ball on tee.  On the downswing allow the swing to go in a lateral motion rather than turn or rotate around the body.  You will feel that this is like a pendulum swing.  Finish the swing and face target.

Drill #5:  Balance and Keeping right knee from bending

Place your right foot on ground, then cross your left foot over in front and place it flat on ground to the right.  Place the shadow of your head over a ball.  Make a full swing as fast as you feel comfortable. By doing this correctly, you will find that you will stay in balance with out any lateral sway.  And there is no way to bend your right knee down because you have it locked with left leg.

Drill #6:  Impact Bag

The purpose of the impact bag is to keep you from lifting or hitting up at impact.  Take a nine iron in your normal NATURAL Hold in right hand with STABLE Stance.  Make a half back swing without moving your lower body, strike bag 4-6 times.  Be sure that your right palm is square toward target at impact.  Then place both hands on club and repeat striking bag.  If at this time you see the bag roll rather than slide, this means you are lifting up.  Hit down when striking bag and gradually you’ll see bag sliding on ground.

Drill #7:  PVC Bar

The purpose of the 5’0” PVC piping is to visualize the full swing. Place two balls 5’ 0” apart.  Then place a third ball 1’0” in back of right ball.  Balance the PVC half way and address the left ball with butt end under left arm pit.  Make a back swing by taking end of PVC straight back low to ground.  DO NOT break wrist.  Start from shoulders.  The end of PVC that was under your left arm will point to ball that is 1’ 0”.  That is your full back swing.  Now bring it back to impact and follow through to a high finish.

Drill #8:  Medicus Club

This dual hinge 5 Iron or driver is to keep you from breaking your wrist throughout the swing.  The easiest way to accomplish this is to start the swing with shoulders without any hand movement.  Swing slow to start and repeat in a very slow tempo.  Gradually swing a little faster and once you see that the hinge is not breaking, you are ready to hit balls.

We need to remember that the right palm has to be square to target.  If you start with hands in any other position other than in a shake hands position, the chances are the club face will not be square at impact.  If it is slightly open, the ball will go right and slightly closed the ball will go left.

On the full swing, one key swing thought is:  at the top of back swing the first move down is returning the right elbow  toward the right hip, at the same time, the lower body laterally moves toward target.  This is where we get the power in the delay of uncorking our right arm.

One of Moe Norman’s quotes:  “Swing SMARTER Not HARDER!”

Are you frustrated with your game…?

Are your scores going up and down…?

The reason why our golf game is up and down is, when we have a good day and an acceptable round, we have a tendency to go out the next time and try harder to score better, NOT SMARTER.

When we can accept to play within ourselves and not try to overdo our “GIVEN SWING,” we will play and score better.

Try not to drive those “300 Yard” shots off the tee like the pros.  They admit that they try to hit the ball as hard as they can and “don’t care” where the ball goes.  Even to the point of hitting into the trees and/or rough.  They know how to get the next shot out of “danger” and onto the green when “we amateurs” do not.

If we control our “mental” side of the game, we will score better.

The name of the game is to hit your golf ball “down the middle”.  Using the Natural Golf Swing, you will be able to hit the ball with accuracy and be “down the middle”.

We strive to hit in the center of the fairway (Accuracy), but as amateurs, we will occasionally hit off center into the rough.  Where it is usually long grass.  Rather than take a Fairway 3 wood, take a lofted iron.  Remember that, in order to get the ball up, you must HIT DOWN.  We have a tendency to sweep a fairway wood and invariably the ball will not come out.  Admit your “Error” and just get the ball back to fairway by playing it safe.
